System Design Interviews: If You Ignore These 3, You Fail

In system design interviews you’re not just drawing boxes and arrows — you’re demonstrating that you can design, run, and maintain a real production system. Interviewers expect candidates to think beyond features and to address operational realities. If you skip these three areas, your design is incomplete and you risk failing the interview.

Below are the three pillars interviewers look for, what to say about each during an interview, and quick examples you can call out.

1) Security

Security isn’t an afterthought. Show you can protect the system at every layer:

  • Authentication & authorization: explain who can access the system and how you’ll verify identity (e.g., OAuth, JWTs, role-based access control).
  • Encryption: encrypt data in transit (TLS) and at rest (disk-level or field-level encryption) where required.
  • Input validation & sanitization: prevent injection attacks and malformed data from compromising the system.
  • Secrets management: use a secrets store (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager) rather than embedding credentials.
  • Auditing & compliance: describe logging of security events, retention, and how you’d support audits or forensics.

Example callout in an interview: “All external APIs use TLS, user tokens are short-lived JWTs refreshed via OAuth, and we log authorization failures to a secure audit stream.”

2) Observability

If you can’t measure and diagnose failures, you can’t run the system. Cover these observability primitives:

3) Performance & Capacity

Designs must meet performance and scale targets. Talk numbers and how you’ll reach them:

  • Key metrics: latency percentiles, throughput (requests/sec), error rate, and resource utilization.
  • Bottlenecks & mitigation: identify likely hot paths and describe caching, batching, sharding, or partitioning strategies.
  • Scaling strategy: vertical vs horizontal scaling, autoscaling rules, and capacity planning for peak traffic.
  • Trade-offs: consistency vs latency, caching staleness, replication lag—be explicit about choices and consequences.
  • Testing: load testing plan and how you’ll validate performance under expected and extreme loads.

Example: “We aim for P95 latency under 200ms. To achieve this we cache frequently-read objects in Redis, shard writes by user ID, and autoscale service instances based on CPU and queue depth.”

How to bring these up in an interview

  • Mention them early: after you outline the high-level architecture, state briefly how you’ll handle security, observability, and performance.
  • Use numbers: SLOs, latency goals, and error-rate thresholds make your design concrete.
  • Discuss trade-offs: interviewers care about trade-offs and reasoning, not just a list of features.
  • Include operational practices: monitoring, runbooks, and capacity planning show you can run the system, not just design it.
