# A/B Testing Fails in Interviews? Use These 5 Alternatives (and Know When)

## When A/B tests aren't an option, show you can pivot

A/B tests are the gold standard for causal product decisions — but they can be invalid or impractical in many real-world situations: low traffic (small N), very long cycles, interference between variants, ethical constraints, or organizational limits. In interviews, hiring managers want to see you can pick an alternative that fits constraints and the decision's risk.

Below are five proven alternatives, when to use them, pros/cons, and short interview-ready talking points.

### 1) Multivariate testing
- What it is: Test combinations of multiple factors (e.g., headline × image × CTA) instead of a single A vs B.
- When to use: You have enough traffic and you want to identify interactions between elements.
- Pros: Finds interactions and optimal combinations; more informative than many one-factor A/Bs.
- Cons: Requires large sample sizes; complexity grows exponentially with factors.
- Interview line: “If traffic supports it, I’d run a multivariate test to surface interactions and find the best combination rather than only testing single changes.”

### 2) Cohort analysis (behavior over time)
- What it is: Group users by shared attributes or start date and compare their behavior longitudinally.
- When to use: You care about retention, lifetime value (LTV), or long-term effects that don’t show up in short experiments.
- Pros: Captures changes over time and lifecycle effects; good for feature launches and retention metrics.
- Cons: Slower insights; susceptible to cohort confounders (seasonality, product changes).
- Interview line: “For retention or monetization questions, I’d use cohort analysis to track long-term impact instead of a short A/B.”

### 3) Surveys and qualitative feedback
- What it is: Ask users directly (in-app, email, or interviews) why they behaved a certain way.
- When to use: You need to understand motivations, barriers, or why an observed pattern exists.
- Pros: Fast, often low-cost; reveals user intent and friction points.
- Cons: Response bias, self-reporting errors, and not causal by itself.
- Interview line: “I’d pair surveys with behavioral data to surface hypotheses — user words often explain signals analytics can’t.”

### 4) Bayesian approaches
- What it is: Use Bayesian inference to continuously update beliefs about treatment effects and stop when uncertainty meets business thresholds.
- When to use: You want flexible stopping rules, smaller samples, or a probabilistic interpretation of results.
- Pros: Intuitive probability statements (e.g., P(treatment better) = 92%), handles sequential analysis naturally.
- Cons: Requires more statistical maturity and careful prior selection; stakeholders may be unfamiliar.
- Interview line: “If we need flexible monitoring or earlier decisions with quantified risk, I prefer a Bayesian framework with clear priors and decision thresholds.”

### 5) Observational / quasi-experimental methods
- What it is: Use existing data and statistical controls (matching, difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity, instrumental variables) to estimate causal effects when randomization isn’t available.
- When to use: You can’t randomize but have rich historical or cross-sectional data.
- Pros: Enables causal inference from non-randomized settings when assumptions hold.
- Cons: Strong identifying assumptions; correlation still threatens validity if not addressed.
- Interview line: “If we can’t run experiments, I’d try difference-in-differences or matching while clearly stating assumptions and sensitivity analyses.”

## How to choose — a quick decision checklist
- Traffic/sample size: small → avoid high-cardinality multivariate tests; consider surveys, Bayesian methods, or observational designs.
- Time horizon: long-term outcome → cohort analysis or observational methods.
- Need for causal certainty: high → prefer experiments or strong quasi-experimental designs; lower → surveys or exploratory analyses.
- Ethics or feasibility constraints: if randomization is unethical/impossible → observational methods + sensitivity checks.
- Stakeholder risk tolerance: if stakeholders want probability statements and early decisions → Bayesian.

Rule of thumb: match the method to constraints (data, time, ethics) and the cost of a wrong decision.

## Interview-ready framing
1. State the constraint: “We can’t run an A/B because of X (low traffic / ethics / long horizon).”
2. Propose the best-fit alternative and why (briefly mention pros and cons). 
3. Describe how you’d validate assumptions and quantify uncertainty (e.g., power calc, sensitivity analysis, triangulate with qualitative feedback).

Example answer: “Given low weekly traffic and a four-week decision window, I’d avoid a full multivariate A/B. I’d run targeted surveys to form hypotheses, use cohort analysis to track early behavioral signals, and apply a Bayesian update so we can make probabilistic decisions as data accrues.”
